Frequently asked questions for the curious

Install PlayStation 3 firmware files
'For legal reasons, we cannot distribute official PlayStation 3 firmware files.' You need to download the latest PlayStation 3 firmware update file from PlayStation.com for use with game simulator. Once downloaded, you must install the firmware using the application's built-in firmware installer in the File> Install Firmware section.

PlayStation 3 title management
For legal reasons, PlayStation 3 titles may not be distributed online and should be automatically discarded from your PlayStation 3 console or PC using a compatible Blu-ray drive. Both Blu-ray and PlayStation Network (PSN) titles must be placed in a single folder with their respective files, and the folder name must match the title ID. If you are not sure what the discarded title area ID is, you can find your area ID at the bottom of your game tray.

Install PlayStation 3 title updates
Title updates are treated like PSN .pkg files. The .pkg update file must be installed using the built-in package installer located in File> Install .pkg. The update will be placed in the title folder corresponding to the correct region ID. Note that title updates must be in the same area for them to work. Title combination areas may cause irreversible damage to the title.

How stable is the RPCS3 game emulator in its current state?
It is stable enough for easy start in games and many more. Stability is more of a factor per game that can change with new constructions as new features apply. As PS3 emulators evolve to be precise, there may be some regression and stability is usually one of them. Rest assured, developers are always hard at work in keeping the application as stable as possible for now and in the future.

What input devices can I use with the program?
'We currently support keyboard / mouse inputs and native DualShock 4 controllers. We also support XInput and MMjoy-based controllers. Unfortunately, we do not currently support DualShock 3 controllers. However, you can use third-party tools such as the program package. 'DualShock 3 controller works as an XInput controller. We plan to add additional input methods in the future as we apply more important features to the emulator.'

Where can I get PlayStation 3 games and software?
'Usually, you want to throw your own PlayStation 3 games and software from your console. We believe this is the most efficient and secure way to transfer disc-based games and digital games from your console to your computer. 'You can also discard games using selected compatible Blu-ray drives. Not all Blu-ray drives recognize PlayStation 3 games because of the way the data is formatted on the disc.'

Can I play multiplayer online games with real consoles or other users?
'Unfortunately, this is not something that is even close to being implemented at the current stage of development of RPCS 3. Online multiplayer is something we are thinking about, but we may not focus on it until it is as stable and as accurate as possible. 'Playing online games with real PlayStation 3 systems would require the user to connect to the PlayStation Network which is not very feasible due to obvious technical and legal limitations.'

Can I at least import my saved data from my real PlayStation 3?
Yes, storage can be imported from a real PlayStation 3 system using the standard USB flash drive transfer method. Because of the way the user account system works on a real PlayStation 3 system, in some cases you may need to re-sign your storage.

Will the simulator be ported to platform X or will it include feature Y?
'If the platform is strong enough to emulate the PlayStation 3, probably yes. We are currently targeting only Windows and Linux. MacOS is not currently supported because it only supports OpenGL 4.1 and does not support Vulkan. The same goes for If it makes sense and is required by many people, we will probably agree and implement it.Currently, the PS3 emulator itself takes precedence over all other minor features such as GUI translations, higher performance analytics, PlayStation support Move, etc. '

RPCS3 is a free and open-source in-development video game console emulator and debugger for the SonyPlayStation 3. The emulator currently runs on Windows, Linux and FreeBSD operating systems, allowing PlayStation 3 games and software to be played and debugged on a personal computer. It is being developed in the C++ programming language targeting X86-64CPUs and features OpenGL and Vulkan as its back-end renderers.

As of December 9, 2020, the developer's compatibility list marks 1890 games as playable and 1070 games being able to go in-game.[2]

Development[edit]

RPCS3 was initially created on May 23, 2011 by programmers DH and Hykem.[3] The developers initially hosted the project on Google Code and eventually moved it to GitHub on August 27, 2013. The emulator was first able to successfully run simple homebrew projects in September 2011[4] and got its first public release in June 2012 as v0.0.0.2.[5] Blender prices at game.

Ps3 Games For Rpcs3

On February 9, 2017, RPCS3 received its first implementation of a PPUThreadScheduler, enhancing its emulation of the many-core Cell microprocessor.[6] On February 16, 2017, RPCS3 gained the ability to install official PlayStation 3 firmware directly to its core file system.[7] In May 2017, it was reported that the implementation of the Vulkan graphics API had shown some performance improvements approaching 400%, pushing several games into 'playable' status.[8]

Requirements[edit]

As of March 21, 2020, the emulator requires a 64-bit version of Windows 7 or later, a modern Linux distribution, or a modern BSD distribution. The PC must have at least 4 GB of RAM, an x86-64CPU and a GPU supporting one of the supported graphics APIS: OpenGL 4.3 or greater and Vulkan, the latter being recommended. Apart from the game itself to be run, the emulator requires a dump of the PlayStation 3's firmware.[9]

Reception[edit]

In March 2014, Cinema Blend's William Usher wrote, 'A lot of gamers originally thought that the complexity of the PlayStation 3's Cell architecture would have prevented it from being emulated'.[10] In March 2014, Eurogamer's Elio Cossu wrote, 'The emulation, even at such an early stage, was a remarkable achievement, considering the complexity of the hardware of the PS3'.[11]

Atlus DMCA takedown notice[edit]

RPCS3 received significant media attention in April 2017 for its ability to emulate Persona 5, achieving playability prior to the game's Western release date.[12][13][14][15] In September 2017, Persona developer Atlus issued a DMCA takedown notice against RPCS3's Patreon page. The action was motivated by the Patreon page making frequent mentions on the emulator's progress on emulating Persona 5. The demand, however, was settled by only removing all Persona 5 references from the page.[16][17]
